Pelvic Health Physiotherapy
The practice of Pelvic Health Physiotherapy includes the assessment, identification and treatment of conditions related to the bladder and bowel systems. A physiotherapist performs a thorough assessment of the condition through history taking and physical examination. Part of the assessment and reassessment includes an external examination of how well your child is able to contract their pelvic floor muscles. Then, a detailed treatment plan is established, taking into consideration the client’s lifestyle, activities, and goals. The treatment plan will include techniques and strategies to improve the symptoms of concern. Furthermore, physiotherapists play an integral role in health promotion.
Some children may be apprehensive about various aspects of a physical exam during assessment and treatment. Alternative options will be discussed with each client and their family. Pelvic Health Physiotherapy includes:
- Assessment of the back and hips, including movement, strength testing, neurological testing such as reflexes
- Assessment of the abdomen, including observation and/or palpation
- External exam of the pelvis, including observation of the perineum, groin, external genitals
An assessment/follow-up session may include but is not limited to:
- Discussion about the patient’s history
- Physical assessment or re-assessment
- Exercise instruction and practice
- Education on the patient’s condition and treatment options
Goal setting - Bowel or bladder tracking
- Toileting strategies
- Education on hydration and/or nutrition
