    Speech-Language Pathology

    Speech-Language Pathology (SLP)

    What is Speech-Language Pathology?

Speech-language pathology, also known as speech therapy, focuses on the prevention, identification, evaluation, and treatment of speech, language, voice, feeding and swallowing disorders in children and adolescents.

    Conditions We Assess/Treat

All children and youth, whether or not they have an identified condition, are welcome at Boomerang Health. The following is a specific list of areas that may be targeted for assessment/treatment by a speech-language pathologist (SLP).

    • Language: Ability to understand spoken and written language, convey ideas verbally and in writing, and communicate in social situations
    • Speech/Phonology: Articulation (pronunciation)  and/or motor speech disorders (coordination and motor control for speech)
    • Social Communication: Ability to use language and social interaction skills appropriately
    • Cognitive Communication: Reasoning, problem solving, memory, and organization skills required to communicate effectively
    • Augmentative Communication: Low and high tech devices to communicate when verbal means is ineffective
    • Fluency: To improve stuttering
    • Voice: To improve vocal quality (e.g. reduce hoarseness)

    Our Approach

At Boomerang Health our SLP treatment approach focuses on using current, evidence-based practice to build communication skills in a fun and naturalistic setting. Whenever possible, we utilize a play based approach that maximizes engagement, participation and learning and supports generalization of skills to non-therapy contexts. Practitioners work as a team with each family to create a treatment journey that fits into their lifestyle, builds trust and helps achieve shared outcomes. Our clinicians will collaborate with other disciplines, when appropriate, to ensure the most comprehensive care is provided.

    Communicative Disorders Assistants (CDA)

    Who are CDAs?

Communicative Disorders Assistants (CDAs) work together with Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) to provide speech therapy to clients and their families. Therapy plans and goals are identified by the SLP, while CDAs provide the week-to-week direct intervention. CDAs hold a university degree with an additional diploma as a Communicative Disorders Assistant from a recognized program. They have formal training in the provision of speech, language, and communication therapy. In addition to the clinical and professional training they receive from their employer, their academic training includes all of the following areas:

    • Speech sound production
    • Receptive and expressive language
    • Pragmatics/social communication
    • Fluency (stuttering)
    • Augmentative and alternative communication

How do SLPs work with CDAs?

SLPs hold a Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology and are registered with the College of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists of Ontario. They assess patients’ communication using formal and informal measures and interpret assessment results to set therapy goals and determine appropriateness to work with a CDA. SLPs monitor therapy progress and adjust therapy goals over time.

SLPs remain involved in the patient’s treatment through any of the following ways:

    • Review of patient session notes
    • Regular meetings with the CDA
    • Direct observation of the patient, at least every 7-10 sessions
    • Meetings with caregivers and community partners (e.g., teachers, doctors, daycare staff)
    • Quarterly quality assurance checks
